Symptom: LEGO EV3 Brick is stuck on Starting... startup screen.


Issue: An automatic firmware update failed. There is a pop-up message that appears whenever an outdated brick is connected. A user may have clicked OK to continue and then cancelled right away.


Solution: Manually update the brick's firmware.

  1. Turn off LEGO EV3 Brick
  2. Turn on while holding Right + Center keys. Updating... startup screen will appear.

    * Device can be manually reset by holding Back + Center + Right buttons. Release Back while continuing to hold Center + Right to enter Firmware Update mode.
  3. Plug in USB to computer and open the EV3 Mindstorms app
  4. Go to Tools > Firmware Update
  5. Click Update Firmware
